Winter

Winter Activities for Dogs & Kids Dogs Love Snow! It’s Snow Much fun!!

Dogs needs lots of exercise and activity in the winter so they don’t get bored staying inside. So, take them outside and give them something to do!

  1. Take Your Dog Snow Diving! If he loves fetching, throw your dog’s ball in the fluffy snow and watch him dive to retrieve it. He’ll watch closely to see where it disappears – you’d better watch too!

  2. Ice Skate with Your Dog! If driveways or sidewalks are cleared but icy, put on your skates and take your dog for a skate instead of a walk. His claws will give him traction. Maybe you can keep up with him!

  3. Decorate the Evergreens with Treats For Your Dog! Place treats on low evergreen branches and let your dog have a scavenger hunt! Use small reward type treats (like the Crazy Dog Train Me! Treats or the Pet Botanics Training Rewards) Put them about 2 feet apart all over the yard, he’ll smell them and have a great hunt.

  4. Take Your Dog For a Sled Ride. If your little ball of fur is used to being transported in a carrier or stroller, firmly attach it to a sled and take your dog for a sled ride! Stop and let her out to exercise. Even the smallest dog needs to exercise – and likes to sniff the area over!

  5. Create an Agility Course in the Snow! Shovel a maze for your dog to run through. Add a snow ramp somewhere in the middle. Create a slide (Yes, dogs love slides too!) Put an obstacle in the path. Make lots of curves. Put a circle at the end so he goes around and comes back to the starting line. Time your dog and see how fast he can run to the end and back. Give him lots of praise at the finish line! Invite friends. Have races. Let your dog watch you go through the course!!

  6. Relax by the fire. After a great afternoon outside in the snow, relax by the fire. Get yourself some hot cocoa and give your dog a bone. Do like your dog will, take a snooze.

Send us a picture of your dog in his favorite winter activity. We ’ll post it on the bulletin board. It may give other kids ideas for fun things to do with their dogs.

WARNING! Don’t let your dog stay outside too long – no longer than you’re willing to be out in the snow. (Unless he’s a Husky, Malamute, Samoyed, St. Bernard, Newfoundland or one of the “made for winter” dogs - they will outlast you.) If your dog goes outside by himself (like if you have a fenced in yard) set a timer so you don’t forget to let him back in! Always check at bedtime and make sure your dog’s inside.
